Chapter 17 - The Ghost Account

|

I unfolded the parchment paper under the warm pendant light of the kitchen island.

Written on the page was a single line of typed text, accompanied by a set of bank routing codes and an account number registered in a private banking institution in Zurich, Switzerland.

The message read:

The $3.8 million Evan and Richard took was never meant for shell companies. It was a down payment to an account you were never supposed to find. Look at the secondary ledger for Project Anchor.

My hands went completely still.

Project Anchor.

That was the codename for the very first warehouse acquisition deal Mercer Logistics had executed seven years ago—a transaction I had personally managed and financed with my grandfather's inheritance money.

My mind raced.

During the federal forensic audit, we had assumed that the $3.8 million stolen by Richard had been funnelled into local real estate scams and personal kickbacks. The federal prosecutors had closed the case after recovering two million dollars in seized assets.

Had there been another layer? A layer even Evan hadn't fully understood?

I immediately pulled out my laptop, logged into my secure private server, and opened the archived digital folders from the original founding files of Mercer Logistics seven years ago.

I searched for 'Project Anchor.'

A encrypted sub-folder appeared on the screen—a folder that had been created three weeks before I even introduced Evan to my grandfather’s legal team.

My pulse began to quicken in my throat.

I entered the master override password that James and I had established.

The folder opened. Inside were three scanned legal contracts dated eight years ago.

As the PDF loaded onto my screen, my breath caught violently in my chest.
