Chapter 8 - The Sky Falls

The sheer volume of the noise outside was deafening. The roar of powerful turbine engines shook the entire foundation of the two-story home. Dust flickered down from the crown molding in the kitchen.
Carter rushed to the kitchen window, pulling back the silk curtains. His face drained of all color in an instant.
Hovering directly over our manicured front lawn was a massive, unmarked military-grade medical helicopter, its searchlights blinding bright. At the same time, three sleek black SUVs squealed around the corner of our quiet suburban street, blocking off both ends of the cul-de-sac with flashing blue and red strobes.
“What… what is this?” Carter stammered, stepping back from the window as if he had seen a ghost. “Mother, what is happening?”
Eleanor stood frozen, her hands trembling as she clutched her cashmere throw blanket. “It’s… it must be a mistake. A police raid for someone else…”
The heavy wooden front door of our house wasn't just opened—it was kicked off its hinges with a violent crash.
Heavy boots slammed against the hardwood floors of the entry hallway. Within seconds, four heavily armed tactical paramedics, dressed in dark tactical gear with no police badges, burst into the kitchen.
“Target located! Female, pregnant, high-risk trauma!” the lead operative yelled into his headset.

They didn't look at Carter. They didn't ask Eleanor for permission. Two men knelt beside me immediately, opening high-tech medical kits while a third set up an IV drip with terrifying speed and efficiency.
“Ma’am, stay calm,” the paramedic said gently, placing an oxygen mask over my face. “Your father sent us. We’re getting you out of here right now.”
