Chapter 16 - The Final Papers

|

I pulled a thick stack of legal documents from my handbag and pressed them flat against the glass panel separating us.

“These are full divorce papers,” I said quietly. “Along with a complete, irrevocable surrender of all parental rights. You will sign them today, or my father’s legal team will ensure your criminal trial is prosecuted at the maximum sentencing limit of twenty-five years without parole.”

Carter stared at the papers, his face twisting in agony.

“You… you set me up,” he stammered, his arrogance attempting a tiny revival. “You lied about who your father was! You tricked us!”

I let out a soft, genuine laugh that startled him.

“I didn't trick you, Carter,” I said, leaning closer to the glass. “My father visited our home four times. He wore simple clothes and drove an old truck because he values humility. You and your mother saw a simple man and chose to treat him like dirt—just like you treated me. You judged his worth by his clothes, and now you’re paying for your own blind arrogance.”

Carter slumped forward, pressing his forehead against the cold glass panel, sobbing silently.

“Sign the papers, Carter,” I said, laying the pen on the small counter for the guard to pass to him. “And never speak my name again.”

He picked up the pen with trembling fingers and signed every single page.
