Chapter 19 - Rebuilding the Foundation

|

As the years began to slide by smoothly, I threw myself back into my career, not as a stressed, overworked nurse in a city that hated me, but as the director of a new regional maternal health clinic funded by my family’s foundation.

We built the clinic specifically to help women trapped in abusive, controlling domestic situations, offering them medical care, legal protection, and safe housing without cost.

I wanted my son to grow up seeing his mother not as a victim, but as a builder of safe harbors.

Leo grew fast. He had my dark eyes and his grandfather’s quiet, observant demeanor. Every afternoon, my father would take Leo out to the farm pastures, teaching him how to drive the old pickup truck—the very same truck Carter had mocked on that fateful night.

One evening, while setting the dinner table on the porch, I watched my father show four-year-old Leo how to fix a broken wooden fence post.

“Remember, son,” my father’s voice drifted over the quiet evening breeze. “You don't ever use your strength to make someone smaller than you. You use it to build fences high enough to keep the wolves outside.”

Little Leo nodded seriously, tapping his small plastic hammer against the wood.

I leaned against the doorframe, a soft smile playing on my lips. My past had been defined by a cruel man who hid behind a title, but my son’s future was being shaped by a real man who understood true strength.
