Chapter 10 - The General’s Return

I was rushed through the night sky, the helicopter blades beating a steady rhythm against the dark Virginia clouds. Inside the medical transport, emergency technicians worked tirelessly to stabilize my bleeding, administering fluids and monitoring my baby’s heartbeat.
“Heart rate is stabilizing,” the lead medic announced into his comms. “The baby is holding on.”
Tears of pure relief spilled over my eyelashes. My son was still fighting.
Twenty minutes later, the helicopter touched down smoothly on the private helipad of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. A team of elite doctors and surgeons was already waiting on the tarmac, rushing my stretcher through the automatic double doors into a private, high-security surgical wing.
As the doors swung open, a tall figure stood waiting in the sterile corridor.
He was no longer wearing the faded flannel shirts, stained jeans, and muddy boots he wore whenever he visited my house in Alexandria. He stood tall in a crisp, dark blue Four-Star General uniform, adorned with rows of colorful service ribbons across his chest.
General Thomas Miller. Chief of Strategic Defense Operations. One of the highest-ranking military officials in the nation.
My father.

He rushed to the side of my gurney, his hard, stern face crumbling into pure fatherly terror as he reached out and took my hand into his large, calloused palm.
“I’m here, Sarah,” he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion as he kissed my forehead. “Dad’s here now. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”
