Chapter 12 - A Mother’s Arrogance

|

Back in the Alexandria home, Mrs. Eleanor Vance was pacing back and forth in her living room, her face pale but her mind still racing with arrogance.

She refused to believe that her prestige and social standing in Virginia society could be stripped away overnight. She sat down at her mahogany desk and began dialing her high-powered friends, board members, and political contacts.

“Hello, Beatrice?” Eleanor said sweetly into the receiver, trying to keep her voice steady. “I need a slight favor. A ridiculous situation occurred at my home tonight with some low-level federal agents. I need you to contact the Governor’s office immediately—”

“Eleanor?” Beatrice’s voice was unusually cold on the line. “Don't call this number again.”

“What? Beatrice, we’ve been on the charity committee together for ten years!”

“The federal government just froze all assets linked to your family’s real estate firm,” Beatrice said flatly. “Your name is all over the news leaks. The board has already met in an emergency session and voted unanimously to revoke your directorship. You are completely toxic, Eleanor. Goodbye.”

The line went dead.

Eleanor stared at the phone in shock. Before she could process the rejection, another harsh knock echoed through the empty house.

She opened the front door to find two officials from the Department of Housing and Building Inspections, accompanied by armed marshals.

“Mrs. Eleanor Vance?” the lead official asked coldly. “We have an immediate seizure order for this property due to unpaid tax audits and pending federal civil asset forfeiture linked to the investigation of Carter Vance.”

“Seizure?” Eleanor shrieked. “This is my son’s home!”

“Not anymore,” the agent replied, stepping inside and holding the door open. “You have ten minutes to grab your personal belongings and vacate the premises.”
