Chapter 20 - The Sound of Freedom

|

The following morning at 10:00 AM, Brandon Morgan walked into the lobby of the downtown Milwaukee Financial Center wearing his best tailored suit, a confident, predatory smile fixed on his face.

He saw Jessica sitting at a quiet corner table, holding a pen over the bank loan authorization documents.

"Good morning, sweetheart," Brandon cooed smoothly, leaning down to kiss her cheek. "Are we ready to secure our future?"

"I have a few questions about the account destination first, Brandon," Jessica said, her voice remarkably steady despite the racing beat of her heart beneath her blouse.

"Questions?" Brandon frowned slightly, his smile fading into that familiar, subtle irritation. "Jessica, we talked about this. You need to trust me. I told you, family comes first, and this investment is for us."

"Just like the investment you made with Victoria Sterling eight years ago?" Jessica asked quietly, looking him dead in the eyes. "Or the duplex you bought with Elena's money?"

Brandon froze. Every ounce of color drained instantly from his face.

"What... what did you just say?" Brandon stammered, his eyes darting frantically around the lobby.

Before he could take a step back, the glass doors of the bank lobby burst open.

Four federal agents in navy blue jackets marked FBI strode into the building, flanked by Detective Miller from the local precinct and Detective Mason from the state financial task force.

"Brandon Morgan!" Agent Reynolds called out loudly, his voice echoing off the marble floor. "Federal agents! Do not move!"

Brandon spun around, his face a mask of pure, frantic terror as he tried to bolt toward the side exit.

Two uniformed officers cut him off instantly, grabbing his arms, twisting them behind his back, and slamming his body face-first against the heavy glass pillar.

CLICK!

The heavy steel handcuffs locked tightly around his wrists.

"Brandon Morgan, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, bank fraud, and interstate financial exploitation," Agent Reynolds declared, reading him his rights as the entire lobby watched in stunned silence.

Jessica stood up slowly from the table, pulling the tiny digital recording unit from her coat pocket, holding it up for Brandon to see.

Across the street, sitting inside a parked silver sedan, Claire and I watched through the tinted glass as the federal agents dragged a sobbing, screaming Brandon Morgan into the back of a black SUV.

He looked completely broken. His charm, his arrogance, his lies, and his manufactured power had finally collapsed into nothingness.

Claire turned the ignition key, and the engine hummed softly to life.

"Where to now, Elena?" Claire asked with a gentle smile.

I looked out the window as the sun broke through the autumn clouds, bathing the city in warm, golden light.

My phone rang in my lap. I looked down at the screen.

It was an alert from my bank, showing a new direct deposit notification from my nursing salary—every single cent earned honestly, every single cent safely secured in a future that belonged entirely to me.

I looked at Claire, a deep, unbreakable peace settling into my soul.

"Let's go home," I said softly. "Mom is waiting."

As we pulled away from the curb, leaving the police lights flashing in the rearview mirror, my phone chimed again with an incoming text from an unknown international number.

I tapped the screen.

The message read:

May you like

Elena? My name is Chloe. Brandon’s brother, Lucas, just proposed to me in Chicago... and he asked me to sign a property waiver today. Please... if you get this, tell me the truth.

I stared at the blinking cursor on the screen, my finger hovering over the keyboard as the car merged onto the quiet highway heading toward home.
