Chapter 18 - The Unseen Ledger

|

I leaned forward, looking down at the documents spread across my desk.

They weren't recent bank statements. They weren't legal papers from our divorce.

They were old, yellowed bank records dating back ten years—three years before Brandon and I had even met.

Across the top of the oldest statement was a name I had never seen before in my life:

Account Holder: Brandon Morgan & Victoria Sterling

My heart did a strange, violent flip inside my chest. "Who is Victoria Sterling?"

"I didn't know either," Jessica sobbed, pointing a trembling finger at a printed newspaper clipping tucked into the back of the folder. "So I ran her name through a public court archive last night."

I picked up the printed news article.

The headline was dated eight years ago, from a small local paper in northern Illinois:

YOUNG NURSE DECLARES BANKRUPTCY AFTER UNEXPLAINED DRAIN OF JOINT ACCOUNTS

My breath caught in my throat. I read the article line by line, my eyes widening with every passing sentence.

Eight years ago, Brandon Morgan had been engaged to a young surgical nurse named Victoria Sterling. They had shared a joint account for three years. Over forty-eight months, nearly ninety thousand dollars had systematically vanished from her savings, transferred to shell accounts managed by Brandon’s brother, Lucas.

When Victoria finally confronted Brandon, an argument broke out in their apartment. Brandon had accused Victoria's elderly father of stealing cash from his home, demanded that she cut ties with her family, and physically threw her out of the apartment.

Victoria had been left financially ruined, forced into personal bankruptcy, while Brandon walked away completely untouched, using her stolen money to launch his initial investments.

"He's done this before..." I whispered, my mind spinning into a dizzying vortex of shock. "I wasn't the first."

"And I was supposed to be the third," Jessica sobbed, putting her head in her hands. "He was going to use my credit, my savings, my life... just like he did to you and Victoria!"

The sheer, calculated evil of it took my breath away.

Brandon wasn't just a selfish husband who made a mistake under stress. He was a systematic, predatory financial sociopath who targeted hard-working, trusting women—specifically nurses and healthcare workers with steady incomes—drained their lives dry, and used his family to launder the proceeds.

"What are you going to do, Jessica?" I asked gently.

Jessica looked up at me, her eyes red, but a tiny spark of determination beginning to flicker behind her terror.

"I'm not letting him destroy me," Jessica said firmly. "I want to stop him, Elena. But I need your help."
