Chapter 11 - The Fall of Apex

|
The pressure on Brandon and his family began to crack their united front within forty-eight hours of the deposition.
Faced with the terrifying prospect of a public trial, criminal fraud charges, and massive legal fees, Lucas’s attorney contacted Claire privately to negotiate a separate settlement for Apex Holdings LLC.
Lucas was terrified of going to prison.
Without telling Brandon, Lucas agreed to surrender seventy percent of the equity in the south Milwaukee duplex to settle the civil fraud claims against his company. The building was placed on the commercial market for an immediate expedited sale.
When Brandon found out that his own brother had cut a deal behind his back to save himself, he went completely ballistic.
Mutual friends told me that Brandon stormed into Lucas’s apartment, resulting in a screaming match that ended with the neighbors calling the police. The tight-knit Morgan family, which Brandon had sacrificed his marriage and my financial future to protect, was rapidly ripping itself apart from the inside.
A week later, Susan Morgan called Claire's office, weeping on the phone, begging for mercy, claiming she was just an old woman who didn't understand how online banking worked.
Claire’s response was cold and unwavering:
"Mrs. Morgan, you knew exactly where that money was coming from. You encouraged your son to lie to his wife, and you referred to her hard work as something she could easily replace. We will be enforcing the full judgment against all assets tied to your accounts as well."
The parasite family was finally facing the bill for their greed.
Four months after the deposition, the commercial duplex was officially sold to a local investment group.
After paying off the remaining mortgage and legal fees, the sale generated a net profit of one hundred and forty-five thousand dollars.
Every single cent of that money was wired directly into a new, secure private account registered under one name only: Elena Vance.
Combined with the remaining frozen funds seized from Brandon's personal accounts, I had recovered over one hundred and sixty thousand dollars of the money he had stolen from me.
