Chapter 19 - The Trap is Set

The next morning, I called Claire.
By noon, Claire, Jessica, and I were sitting in a private conference room at Claire's law firm, reviewing the newly uncovered evidence regarding Victoria Sterling and Brandon's historic pattern of predatory financial fraud.
"This changes everything," Claire declared, her eyes burning with fierce legal energy as she examined the decade-old bank records. "This isn't just a civil marital dispute anymore. This is a clear, documented pattern of grand larceny, wire fraud, and systematic financial exploitation across state lines."
"Can we prosecute him?" Jessica asked eagerly.
"The statute of limitations on wire fraud under federal jurisdiction is ten years," Claire explained, a cold, lethal smile spreading across her face. "Because Brandon transferred funds across state lines from Illinois to Wisconsin during his relationship with Victoria, the FBI's Financial Crimes Unit has jurisdiction."
Claire turned to look at Jessica.
"Brandon doesn't know you came to see Elena, right?" Claire asked.
"No," Jessica shook her head. "He thinks I'm at home waiting for him to come back from his business trip tonight. He expects me to sign the bank loan papers tomorrow morning."
"Good," Claire said, leaning across the table. "Here is what we are going to do."
Over the next two hours, Claire coordinated with a contact in the Assistant United States Attorney's office.
Jessica agreed to wear a hidden wire device provided by federal investigators during her meeting with Brandon the following morning, where Brandon was expected to formally press her to sign over the fifty-thousand-dollar loan documents.
That evening, I sat on my porch back home, watching the sunset over the quiet trees.
Two years ago, I thought my story with Brandon Morgan had ended when I dropped my keys on the glass table and walked out into the night.
Now, I realized that walking away had only been the first step.
I hadn't just saved myself and my mother. I had been positioned by fate to help bring down a predator who had spent a decade ruining innocent women's lives.
"Elena?" my mother called out gently from the kitchen door. "Dinner's ready, honey."
I turned, looking at my mother's warm, peaceful face framed by the porch light.

"Coming, Mom," I said softly, standing up.
Tomorrow, the final curtain was coming down on Brandon Morgan.
