Chapter 9 - Unlocking the Drive

Daniel turned the laptop screen toward Rebecca, Dr. Patel, and me.
“The email sent to Rebecca on June 14th was indeed dispatched from this laptop’s registered MAC address,” Daniel explained, pointing to a string of technical numbers on his monitor. “However, look at the user login log for that exact timestamp.”
He highlighted a line of code.
“The laptop was logged in under a hidden admin profile created three days prior under the name 'LE_Admin'—Luke Ellis Admin. He didn't just log into Caroline’s email; he created a secondary system bypass so he could operate her accounts remotely without leaving a local trace on her standard user dashboard.”
My jaw dropped. “He planned it out.”
“It gets deeper,” Daniel said, clicking open a secondary folder located in the computer's root directory. “While digging through the unallocated space on the hard drive, I recovered a deleted folder named 'FAMILY_RECORDS' that was created eight years ago.”
“What’s inside it?” Rebecca asked, leaning forward.
Daniel opened the folder. Inside were dozens of scanned PDF documents, medical letters, and official lab reports.
The top document was a PDF file dated four months before Luke and I got married.
The header read: CENTER FOR REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE & GENETIC TESTING.
Patient Name: Luke Ellis.
I stared at the screen, my mind racing. “Luke went to a fertility clinic before we were married?”
“He never told you about this?” Dr. Patel asked, stepping closer to inspect the document.
“Never!” I gasped. “He always told me he was completely healthy! He refused to ever get tested when we were trying to have a baby! He said it was an insult to his manhood!”

Dr. Patel put on her reading glasses and read the clinical notes on the screen. As her eyes scanned the page, her expression shifted from professional curiosity to utter horror.
“Oh, my God,” Dr. Patel whispered.
