Chapter 17 - Day in Court

|
Six months later.
The County Superior Courthouse was packed to capacity. Reporters, television cameras, and spectators filled every row of wooden benches.
I walked down the central aisle of the courtroom wearing a tailored charcoal-gray suit. My hair was styled neatly, framing my face, leaving a portion of the pale, silvery scar tissue along my jawline visibly exposed.
I no longer hid my scars under high collars or heavy makeup. They were not marks of shame; they were proof that I had walked through the fire and survived.
Sitting at the prosecution table alongside ADA Sterling, I looked across the room at the defense table.
Luke sat in an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands handcuffed at his waist. He looked thin, hollowed-out, his once-pristine appearance completely shattered. Beside him sat Evelyn, wearing a plain gray inmate uniform, her eyes staring blankly at the floor.
When it was my turn to take the witness stand, I walked up calmly, placed my hand on the Bible, and swore to tell the truth.
I looked directly at the jury, then turned my gaze straight toward Luke.
For two hours, I testified. I described the eight years of emotional manipulation, the false claims of my infertility, the intercepted letters from my sister, the hidden genetic reports, and finally, the horrific moment he lifted the boiling pot from the stove and poured it over my body.

Luke tried to avoid my eyes, staring down at his lap, but I kept my voice steady, clear, and unyielding.
“He thought he could burn away my voice,” I concluded, my words echoing through the silent courtroom. “He thought if he destroyed my body, nobody would ever listen to the truth. But I am standing here today, whole, free, and entirely healed.”
