Chapter 14 - Confrontation at the Station

|

The involvement of Evelyn Ellis opened a whole new layer of the nightmare.

Detective Miller explained that phone records subpoenaed from Luke’s cell carrier showed over forty calls between Luke and his mother in the forty-eight hours leading up to the attack in the kitchen.

“Evelyn was aware of his genetic translocation from the beginning,” Detective Miller revealed. “In fact, the original clinic consultation eight years ago was paid for using Evelyn’s personal credit card.”

“She knew,” I whispered, feeling sick to my stomach. “She sat in my house and watched me cry, and she knew the entire time.”

“We executed a search warrant at Evelyn’s residence this morning,” ADA Sterling chimed in. “Inside her home office, we found a secondary lockbox containing your original medical bills from your miscarriages, along with handwritten notes detailing how much money Luke spent on your hospital stays.”

“She was keeping tabs on my medical costs?”

“She was pressuring Luke to get rid of you,” ADA Sterling corrected sharply. “Evelyn’s personal journals reveal she believed you were becoming a 'financial drain' and a threat to Luke’s reputation. She explicitly encouraged him to file for divorce based on false claims of mental instability.”

“And when I refused to be pushed out quietly...” I said, the puzzle pieces locking together.

“When you began asking questions about going to a new specialist last month,” Detective Miller said, “they panicked. They realized a new doctor would run a full panel on Luke and expose the eight-year lie.”
