Chapter 15 - The Mother-in-Law's Web

Two days later, the news broke across the local media.
PROSECTOR CHARGES HUSBAND AND MOTHER-IN-LAW IN HORRIFIC BOILING WATER ASSAULT AND YEARS-LONG COERCIVE CONTROL SCHEME.
Evelyn Ellis was arrested at her suburban home, photographed in handcuffs as officers led her to a police cruiser. The mugshots of Luke and Evelyn appeared side-by-side on the evening news—Luke looking disheveled and frantic, Evelyn glaring at the camera with icy disdain.
In my hospital room, Rebecca and I watched the broadcast in silence.
“Look at her,” Rebecca said, pointing at Evelyn’s smug face on the television screen. “She thought her family’s precious reputation was worth destroying your life over.”
“She lost everything anyway,” I said quietly.
A knock sounded at the door. Elaine, the patient advocate, walked in carrying a large cardboard box labeled EVIDENCE RELEASE - PERSONAL PROPERTY.
“The police have finished cataloging the non-evidential items retrieved from the Elm Street house,” Elaine said, setting the box on my bed. “These are yours, Caroline.”
I opened the box.
Inside lay items Luke had hidden from me for years: my mother’s handwritten recipe books, my old college photo albums, my childhood journals, and a small wooden box containing baby booties my mother had knitted before she passed away.
I held the tiny yellow knitted booties against my chest, smelling the faint scent of cedar and old wool.

Luke had tried to erase my history. He had tried to strip away my identity, my family, my health, and my sanity until I was nothing more than an obedient, terrified ghost living in his house.
But he had failed.
