Chapter 18 - Rebuilding the Broken

The jury deliberated for less than three hours.
When they returned to the courtroom, the foreman read the verdict loud and clear:
Guilty on all counts.
Luke Ellis was sentenced to twenty-eight years in state penitentiary without the possibility of parole for fifteen years. Evelyn Ellis was sentenced to six years in state prison for her role in the cover-up and evidence destruction.
As the bailiffs clamped heavy iron shackles around Luke’s ankles to lead him away, he turned his head toward me one last time. Tears streamed down his pale face, his lips moving silently as he tried to say my name.
I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I simply watched him disappear through the heavy metal door, ending his reign of terror forever.
Outside the courthouse, a throng of news reporters surrounded Rebecca and me. Microphones were thrust into my face, camera flashes strobing against the afternoon sky.
A reporter shouted, “Caroline! What do you have to say to other women who are currently trapped in abusive relationships?”

I stepped up to the podium, looking directly into the primary news camera.
“Don't let them convince you that you are broken,” I said firmly. “Don't let them make you believe you have nowhere to go. The truth is stronger than their lies, and you are far stronger than the fire they throw at you.”
