Chapter 5 - The Forged Loan

|

As the paramedics carefully lifted Ruth onto a stretcher to transport her to the hospital, my father walked over and placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. He handed me a thick, sealed legal folder.

Inside was the very first draft of my divorce petition.

I had asked his elite team of attorneys to prepare it two weeks earlier, after I discovered highly suspicious, unexplained activity involving Theo’s extensive trust fund.

But beneath the divorce petition was a heavily redacted loan agreement I had never seen before.

I stared at the paperwork in horror. Garrett had illegally pledged millions of dollars in restricted shares held inside our son’s irrevocable trust as collateral for a massive private loan to save his failing tech company.

My signature appeared perfectly forged beside his on the dotted line.

I had never signed it. I had never even seen the document.

The independent trust structure required explicit, notarized approval from a second designated protector before any shares could be pledged or moved. That secondary approval was also present on the document.

The signature belonged to Ruth.

She had not signed anything either.

I flipped to the final page. Margaret Lawson was boldly listed as the official witness who legally claimed both signatures were genuine and signed in her presence.

I slowly lifted my head and looked directly toward Margaret.

She had already realized the tide had turned and was frantically trying to blend into the crowd, moving quickly toward the nearest side exit.

The hotel manager, anticipating her move, stepped smoothly into her path, blocking the door.

Garrett’s face turned paper white as he saw me holding the forged documents.

They had not merely used my secret money to artificially support his bloated company. They had actively conspired to steal millions from our infant son.

My lead attorney, Caroline Shaw, stepped forward and pointed toward one final, damning line on the loan document.

“The loan money did not go into Lawson Technologies’ operating accounts, Evelyn,” Caroline stated loudly, ensuring the entire room could hear.

I looked closer. Six hundred thousand dollars had been immediately transferred to a private, offshore account belonging to a woman Garrett had secretly been meeting for more than a year.

I knew her name. And she was standing right near the stage.
