The decrypted contents of the Apex Holdings ledger were a revelation.
My father’s forensic accountants spent three sleepless nights analyzing the data Natalie had provided. The ledger meticulously documented twenty-five years of Margaret Lawson’s corrupt financial history. It detailed bribes paid to city officials, massive tax evasion schemes, and the systematic embezzlement from the original Vance-Lawson joint venture.
But the most damning entry was a payment made exactly one week before my mother’s fatal car crash.
"Look at this line," Harrison said, pointing to a highlighted row on the massive spreadsheet projected onto the conference room wall. "A payment of two hundred thousand dollars was wired from Apex Holdings to an independent mechanic named Arthur Finch."
"Who is Arthur Finch?" I asked, staring at the name.
"He was the lead mechanic at the luxury dealership that serviced your mother’s car," Harrison replied, his voice tight with suppressed rage. "The police interviewed him after the crash. He testified that the brake lines had failed due to a rare manufacturer defect. The case was closed based on his expert testimony."
"Margaret paid him to cut the lines and lie to the police," I whispered, the horrific reality finally clicking into place.
"Yes," my father nodded slowly. "And thanks to this ledger, we now have the financial proof to force the district attorney to reopen the investigation."
"Is Arthur Finch still alive?" Caroline asked, already pulling out her phone to dispatch investigators.

"He owns a string of very successful auto body shops in New Jersey now," Harrison said bitterly. "It seems that two hundred thousand dollars was quite a seed investment."
"Bring him in," I said to Caroline. "Don't let the police do it. Have our private investigators pick him up. I want to see his face when he realizes the past has finally caught up to him."
