Two months later, the dust had begun to settle.
Margaret was officially indicted for first-degree murder, and Garrett was awaiting sentencing for federal wire fraud and forgery. The Lawson name had become synonymous with corporate scandal.
But there were still three hundred innocent employees at Lawson Technologies who were facing sudden unemployment due to the liquidation.
I sat in my father’s expansive corner office at Vance Global, reviewing the bankruptcy filings.
"We could just let it fold," Harrison suggested, sipping his coffee. "The patents are outdated, and the brand is completely toxic. It would be a clean break."
"The employees didn't forge any documents," I argued, tapping my pen against the desk. "They didn't kick Ruth. They just showed up to work every day trying to feed their families. They shouldn't be punished for Garrett's incompetence."
Harrison smiled, a proud, genuine expression. "You sound exactly like your mother. What do you propose?"
"Vance Global buys the core assets of Lawson Technologies out of bankruptcy for pennies on the dollar," I outlined quickly. "We rebrand it, restructure the management team, and inject the capital I originally intended to provide before I discovered the fraud. We save the jobs, and we turn it into a profitable subsidiary."
"And who is going to run this new subsidiary?" Harrison asked, raising an eyebrow. "I certainly don't have the time."
"I am," I said confidently. "I've been quietly acting as Garrett's shadow CEO for two years anyway. It's time I did it in the light."

Harrison leaned back in his leather chair, looking at me with immense pride. "Helena would be so incredibly proud of the woman you've become, Evie."
"I have a lot of lost time to make up for," I said, gathering the files. "Let's get to work."
