Chapter 20 - The Second Christening

One year after the disastrous events at the Grand Palace Hotel, we hosted a much smaller, far more intimate celebration.
We gathered in the beautiful, sunlit private chapel on my father’s sprawling estate to celebrate Theo’s second birthday, and to quietly reaffirm his place in our family, free from the dark shadows of his father's lineage.
There were no massive crystal chandeliers, no hundreds of wealthy strangers, and absolutely no string quartets.
It was just family.
My father stood near the altar, holding a laughing Theo in his arms. Theo was thriving, completely unaware of the massive corporate and legal battles that had been fought to secure his future.
Ruth sat proudly in the front pew, wearing a beautiful, brand new silk cardigan that my father had specially commissioned for her. The small scar above her eyebrow was barely visible, a fading reminder of the violent spark that had ignited our entire revolution.
I walked over and sat beside her, resting my head gently on her shoulder.
"You look beautiful today, Mom," I said softly.
"I feel beautiful," Ruth smiled, patting my hand. "And you look genuinely happy, Evelyn. For the first time in a very long time."
"I am," I admitted, watching my father bounce Theo on his hip.
I had successfully rebuilt my life from the absolute wreckage Garrett had left behind. Vance Innovations was thriving, my father and I had forged a powerful, unbreakable bond, and my son was surrounded exclusively by people who loved him unconditionally.
The cruel men in expensive suits had been thoroughly defeated. The women they had underestimated had completely dismantled their empire and built a better one in its place.

As the chaplain offered a gentle, heartfelt blessing for Theo, I closed my eyes and breathed in the profound, unshakable peace.
The story had begun with a kicked chair, but it was ending with us standing taller than ever before.
