Chapter 14 - The Mechanic's Confession

|
Arthur Finch was brought into a secure room at Vance Global by two of my father’s most intimidating private security contractors. He was an older man now, wearing an expensive suit that didn't quite hide the grease stains permanently etched into his hands.
He looked nervous but defiant as Harrison, Caroline, and I entered the room.
"You can't just kidnap people off the street," Finch blustered, trying to sound authoritative. "I'll sue you for everything you have."
Harrison tossed a printed copy of the Apex ledger onto the table in front of him.
"I don't think you're in a position to sue anyone, Arthur," Harrison said coldly.
Finch looked down at the highlighted payment. His face drained of all color, and his arrogant posture completely collapsed.
"Margaret Lawson paid you two hundred thousand dollars one week before my wife died," Harrison continued, leaning over the table. "You testified that the brakes failed naturally. But we both know that was a lie."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Finch stammered, sweating profusely. "That payment was for... consulting work."
"Consulting work for a holding company that didn't own any vehicles?" Caroline interjected smoothly. "Mr. Finch, the FBI currently has Margaret Lawson in custody for multi-million dollar fraud. They are seizing all her assets. When we hand this ledger over to them, they won't just charge you with perjury. They will charge you as an accessory to first-degree murder."
Finch swallowed hard, looking wildly between the three of us.
"There is no statute of limitations on murder, Arthur," I added quietly. "You will die in a federal prison."
"She made me do it!" Finch suddenly cracked, burying his face in his hands. "Margaret said she would ruin my business! She said she just wanted to scare Helena, to make her have a small accident so she would miss the board meeting! I didn't know the car would go off the cliff! I swear!"
"You cut the brake lines," Harrison stated, a terrible finality in his voice.
May you like
"Yes," Finch sobbed. "I did it. Margaret paid me, and then the police chief paid me to keep my mouth shut during the investigation."
Harrison looked at Caroline. "Call the District Attorney. Tell them we have a full confession."
