Chapter 8 - The Legal Architect

|

Matthew Kane looked less like a lawyer and more like a predator in a bespoke suit. He had steel-gray eyes, gold-rimmed glasses, and carried a leather briefcase that contained enough blackmail material to collapse small governments. He was Elias Rowan’s chief legal strategist.

He met Lena in the private garden of the Caldwell estate while Grant was out at a "meeting." Marcus stood guard by the rose bushes, ensuring absolute privacy.

Matthew sat across the wrought-iron table, sipping black coffee as he reviewed the printed documents Lena had handed him.

"This is remarkably thorough, Mrs. Caldwell," Matthew said, raising an eyebrow. "Your husband is leaving a paper trail a mile wide. The insurance fraud alone carries a ten-year federal sentence."

"I don't want him just in prison," Lena said, resting her hands on the wheels of her chair. "I want the company. It was built on the blood and sweat of people who couldn't fight back. I want to take it from him."

Matthew pulled a slim blue folder from his briefcase. "Your father anticipated this. Over the last two weeks, through various offshore proxies, we have been quietly acquiring minority voting shares of Caldwell Development Group. We bought out three angry board members who were tired of Grant’s erratic behavior."

Lena’s eyes widened. "How much do we own?"

"Thirteen percent," Matthew smiled, a terrifying, predatory expression. "Enough to call an emergency vote. Enough to demand full audits. But if we drop these documents all at once, the stock crashes, and the company is worthless."

"So how do we do it?"

"We humiliate him publicly," Matthew explained smoothly. "We create a scandal so massive, so undeniable, that the board is forced to oust him immediately to save face. Then, as the largest minority shareholder, you step in with a proposal to save the company from bankruptcy."

Lena looked toward the house. The massive Caldwell anniversary gala was in two days. Three hundred of the city’s elite would be in attendance.

"Matthew," Lena said softly. "Do you know how to hijack an audiovisual system?"

Matthew’s smile grew wider. "Mrs. Caldwell, I am offended you even have to ask."
