Chapter 11 - The Begging King

By Monday morning, the fallout was apocalyptic.
Caldwell Development Group’s stock plummeted forty-two percent in the first three hours of trading. Two major international banks immediately froze their lines of credit. The mayor of San Diego held a press conference announcing a formal criminal probe into the illegal evictions and charity fraud displayed on the screen.
Lena sat in the living room of a highly secure penthouse suite Elias had arranged, overlooking the ocean. Marcus stood silently by the door.
Her phone rang. It was the seventy-sixth time Grant had called her since the gala.
This time, she answered.
"Are you completely insane?!" Grant screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria. "You ruined my life! The board is trying to suspend me! My father is threatening to disown me! Are you happy now?"
"I'm not happy, Grant," Lena said calmly, sipping a cup of chamomile tea. "I'm just thorough."
"Lena, please," Grant’s tone shifted violently from rage to desperate, pathetic sobbing. "I’ll do anything. I’ll sign whatever you want. I’ll give you half the company, the house, the cars. Just issue a public statement saying the documents were doctored. Please, I’m begging you."
Lena looked at the cast on her leg. She remembered the sheer terror of lying in the dark, wondering if she was going to bleed to death internally while her husband drank champagne with his mistress.
"Do you remember what you told me in the storage room, Grant?" she asked softly.
Silence on the other end. Only ragged breathing.
"You told me to remember my place," Lena said, her voice turning to ice. "Well, I found it. It’s sitting right on top of your throat."
She ended the call and blocked his number.
Matthew Kane walked into the living room, holding a tablet. "The board of directors just called an emergency vote. They want to oust Grant and Warren. But things are getting dangerous, Lena. Warren Caldwell isn't just going to roll over. He’s calling in favors from the underworld."

Marcus checked the security feed on his phone. His eyes narrowed.
"They’re already here," Marcus said, drawing his weapon. "We need to move. Now."
