Chapter 19 - The Arrests

|

The police didn't just arrest Grant for assault.

Right behind the local San Diego PD were federal agents, armed with warrants signed by judges who were no longer afraid of Charles Pike or Warren Caldwell.

Lena stood on the grand stone balcony of the estate, the cool ocean breeze whipping her hair, as she watched the flashing red and blue lights paint the driveway.

They dragged Warren out first. His face was bloodied from Grant’s punches, his expensive suit torn to shreds. The arrogant titan of industry was crying, begging the federal agents to call his lawyers, screaming that he was a pillar of the community.

Then came Grant.

He was in handcuffs, his knuckles split and bleeding. As the officers led him toward the back of a squad car, he looked up and saw Lena standing on the balcony.

He stopped walking. The officers shoved him, but he resisted just long enough to look at his wife.

There was no anger left in his eyes. Only absolute, hollow devastation. He had lost his company, his wealth, his mistress, his father, and his freedom in a matter of weeks.

"Lena!" Grant shouted, his voice cracking over the sirens. "Lena, I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!"

Lena looked down at the man who had broken her leg. She felt no pity. She felt no triumph, either. She just felt empty.

She turned her back on him and walked back inside, leaving him screaming into the night.

Inside the ruined ballroom, Matthew Kane was packing up his briefcase. Marcus stood by the door, ever vigilant.

"The federal prosecutors have enough to put Warren away for the rest of his natural life," Matthew reported efficiently. "RICO charges, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit murder regarding your mother. Grant will likely serve five to ten for corporate fraud and assault."

"And Veronica?" Lena asked.

"Immunity in exchange for her testimony against her father and Warren," Matthew said, closing his briefcase with a snap. "But she is entirely broke. She'll spend the rest of her life looking over her shoulder."

Lena nodded slowly. The war was over. She had won.

So why did the air in the room suddenly feel so cold?
