Chapter 14 - The Ghosts of the Past

Lena’s hands trembled as she opened the yellowed envelope.
Inside were old, grainy photographs. A construction site in D.C. A protest. A man lying in a pool of blood. And a candid photo of Warren Caldwell handing a thick briefcase to a younger Charles Pike.
At the bottom of the stack was the police report of her mother’s death. Cause of death: Vehicular manslaughter. The driver was never found.
"Warren paid off the police," Elias explained, his voice thick with decades of suppressed rage. "Charles Pike used his political connections to bury the investigation. I didn't find out until it was too late. I spent the next twenty years building my network, gathering power, waiting for the day I could dismantle them piece by piece."
Tears streamed down Lena’s face. She looked at the photo of her beautiful, fearless mother.
For three years, she had sat at Warren Caldwell’s dining table. She had smiled at him. She had accepted his hollow praise. She had married the son of the man who ordered her mother’s execution.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Lena choked out, her chest heaving.
"Because your mother made me swear to keep you out of this world," Elias said, stepping forward and placing a heavy, comforting hand on her shoulder. "She wanted you to be an architect. To build beautiful things. Not destroy them."
Lena looked up at her father. The sadness in her eyes slowly hardened, freezing over until they looked exactly like his.
"They broke my leg, Dad," Lena whispered, her voice devoid of all warmth. "They tried to break my spirit. And they murdered my mother."
She carefully placed the photographs back into the envelope.
"I don't want to build beautiful things anymore," she said, looking toward the door. "I want to burn Caldwell Development to the ground, with Warren and Grant locked inside."

Elias smiled. It was a terrifying, proud expression.
"Then let’s go to the board meeting."
