Chapter 10 - The Presentation

|
Grant’s father, Warren Caldwell, stood at the podium on the main stage. He was a ruthless, aging titan of industry, speaking smoothly into the microphone about family values, legacy, and the future of San Diego.
"And I want to extend a special tribute to my daughter-in-law, Lena," Warren boomed, gesturing toward her. "For her resilience, her grace, and her undying loyalty to this family!"
The crowd erupted into polite, wealthy applause. Grant beamed, waving to the crowd.
Lena rolled her chair toward the stage. She gestured to the host for the microphone.
Grant frowned, stepping forward. "Lena, what are you doing? Stick to the script."
Marcus materialized from the shadows, placing a heavy hand squarely on Grant’s shoulder, rooting the billionaire to the spot.
Lena took the microphone. Her voice echoed flawlessly through the massive ballroom.
"Thank you, Warren, for that beautiful speech about family values," Lena said. "To celebrate our anniversary tonight, I’ve prepared a short film to show everyone exactly what Caldwell family values look like behind closed doors."
Up in the sound booth, Matthew Kane hit a button.
A massive, fifty-foot projection screen dropped from the ceiling behind the stage.
The first image flashed. It was high-definition security footage of Grant and Veronica passionately kissing in the lobby of a La Jolla hotel, timestamped just days after Lena’s catastrophic injury.
The ballroom gasped in unison. A reporter dropped his glass. It shattered loudly.
"Turn it off!" Grant screamed, his face turning purple. He lunged for the stage, but Marcus easily shoved him backward into a table of hors d'oeuvres.
The screen flashed again. This time, it displayed massive, undeniable bank transfers from Caldwell Development’s charity fund directly into a shell company owned by Veronica Pike.
"But it’s not just infidelity," Lena’s voice rang out, cold and merciless over the chaos.
The screen shifted to internal Caldwell emails. The crowd read, in horror, Grant’s own words ordering the illegal eviction of families in Chicago, explicitly telling his contractors to use violence if necessary to clear the buildings for luxury development.
Veronica screamed, covering her face. Warren Caldwell gripped the podium, looking like he was having a heart attack.
Lena looked down at Grant, who was sprawled on the floor, surrounded by flashing cameras.

"Happy anniversary, Grant," Lena said into the mic.
She handed the microphone back to the stunned host, spun her wheelchair around, and rolled out of the ballroom as the Caldwell empire began to burn to the ground.
