Chapter 6 - The Silence of the Elite

“What happened to my wife?”
The words echoed off the vaulted ceiling of the grand ballroom, hanging in the air like a live grenade.
Nobody answered.
The three hundred guests, who just minutes ago had been laughing at my expense, were now completely paralyzed. My mother’s crystal champagne glass was trembling so violently in her hand that the expensive liquor was sloshing over the rim onto the pristine white tablecloth.
My sister Claire, the bride who demanded to be the center of attention, had completely stopped smiling. She looked back and forth between me and the titan standing in front of me, her mouth slightly open in pure shock.
And standing there beneath the glow of the chandeliers, cocooned in the warmth of my husband’s jacket, I finally understood something profound.
My family hadn't just humiliated the lonely, pathetic daughter they believed had failed at life.
They had publicly, viciously humiliated the wife of the one man in this entire city they desperately could not afford to offend.
My father swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing nervously. He gripped the edge of the head table, his knuckles turning white as he tried to find his voice.
“It... it was an accident,” my father forced out, his tone entirely stripped of its previous arrogance. He offered a weak, trembling laugh. “Just a clumsy waiter. It was only a joke, really. We didn't know you were... acquainted with Meredith.”
Adrian Vale tilted his head slightly.
Everyone in the financial world knew that name. Vale Capital was the apex predator of the East Coast. They owned commercial real estate, tech startups, media conglomerates, and highly lucrative hospitality groups across Boston.

Including, as my father was slowly realizing, the very hotel currently hosting my sister’s extravagant wedding.
“A joke,” Adrian repeated. His voice was soft, but it carried a razor-sharp edge that made my father flinch.
