Chapter 18 - The Final Secret

“Before we go,” Adrian said, his voice echoing in the nearly empty room, forcing my mother to look up from the floor.
“You asked me earlier why I did this, Mrs. Harrington,” Adrian said, his dark eyes locking onto my mother. “You assumed I targeted your husband’s company because you insulted my wife tonight.”
My mother sniffled, looking confused. “Didn't you?”
“I have been planning the destruction of Harrington Properties for five years,” Adrian revealed, dropping a bombshell that made my heart skip a beat.
I looked up at him in surprise. We had only been together for three years.
“Five years ago,” Adrian continued, “I discovered a trust fund that had been illegally liquidated. A trust fund left by a woman named Eleanor Vance. Does that name ring a bell, Martha?”
My mother’s face went completely, horrifyingly blank.
“Eleanor Vance was Meredith’s biological grandmother on her father’s side,” Adrian said, addressing the room. “When she died, she left her entire estate—nearly ten million dollars—to Meredith. But Arthur and Martha forged Meredith’s signature, liquidated the trust, and used the money to launch Harrington Properties.”
My jaw dropped. The money they used to build their empire... it was mine. It had always been mine.
“They told you that you were a burden, Meredith,” Adrian said softly, looking down at me with fierce protectiveness. “They told you that you owed them for raising you. But the truth is, every single car they drove, every diamond they wore, and every meal they ate was paid for with money they stole from you.”

He looked back at my mother, his eyes burning with absolute hatred.
“I didn't just ruin you tonight, Martha. I simply returned my wife’s stolen property.”
