Chapter 19 - Walking Away

|

The revelation hung heavy in the air.

Thirty-two years of feeling like an inadequate failure, of believing I was a financial burden to a family that graciously put up with me, evaporated in an instant.

I wasn't the charity case. I was the foundation.

My mother couldn't even form a response. She just sat on the floor, surrounded by broken glass and spilled wine, completely shattered by the weight of her own decades-long deceit.

“Let’s go home,” Adrian whispered softly, his hand resting reassuringly on the small of my back.

“Yes,” I agreed, pulling his large tuxedo jacket tighter around my shoulders.

We walked together down the long center aisle of the ballroom. The four men in black formed a protective perimeter around us, ensuring no one came close. We left the Boston Plaza Hotel without looking back, stepping out into the cool, crisp evening air.

A sleek black Maybach was waiting at the curb. The driver opened the door, and Adrian helped me inside before sliding in next to me.

As the car pulled away, leaving the chaos, the police sirens, and the ruins of the Harrington legacy behind, I finally let out a long, shuddering breath.

Adrian reached over, pulling me into his chest. I rested my head against him, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart.

“Are you okay?” he asked quietly, his fingers gently stroking my hair.

“I’m free,” I whispered, closing my eyes. And for the first time in my life, I truly meant it.

I thought the war was finally over. I thought the past was dead and buried.

But as the Maybach merged onto the highway, Adrian reached into a hidden compartment in the armrest.
