Chapter 15 - The Financial Trap

My father, who had been sitting in stunned silence while his wife was socially executed, suddenly snapped his head up.
“Federal crimes?” my father repeated, his voice barely a squeak. “Mr. Vale, I assure you, Harrington Properties is a fully compliant, legitimate business.”
“It was,” Adrian corrected him. “Until three years ago, when you started funneling money from your investors' escrow accounts into offshore shell companies to fund your wife’s shopping addictions and your younger daughter’s lavish lifestyle.”
My father’s face went from pale white to a sickly shade of gray.
“You... you don't know what you're talking about,” he stammered, standing up. “That’s slander!”
Adrian laughed. It was a dark, hollow sound that sent chills down my spine.
“Did you really think Vale Capital blindly considered loaning forty million dollars to a sinking ship without doing a forensic audit?” Adrian asked, stepping forward. “We didn't just look at your books, Arthur. We bought your debt. We bought the mortgages on your commercial buildings. We bought the loan on this very mansion you live in.”
My father gripped his chest, looking as though he might faint.
“The bailout contract you’re holding?” Adrian continued, pointing at the paper on the table. “It isn't a rescue plan. It’s a total asset forfeiture agreement. If you sign it, I own your company, and you walk away with nothing. If you don't sign it...”
Adrian paused, letting the silence stretch out agonizingly.
“If you don't sign it, I hand over the audit files to the Securities and Exchange Commission in the morning, and you spend the rest of your natural life in federal prison.”

My father collapsed back into his chair. The mighty patriarch of the Harrington family was officially broken.
Then, the heavy brass doors of the ballroom rattled.
