Chapter 7 - The Lock Box

|

The ballroom remained unnaturally quiet after the doors slammed shut.

Two hundred guests sat in stunned silence, not knowing whether to leave, apologize, or cry. The catering staff stood near the kitchen doors, holding trays of untouched prime rib.

I walked over to the corner of the room where Sophie was sitting on an armchair, hugging her stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest. Uncle David’s wife was sitting beside her, gently stroking her hair.

I dropped to my knees, not caring that my expensive white silk dress was wiping across the dirty floor.

"Sophie," I whispered, pulling her into my arms.

"Did I do a bad thing, Mommy?" she asked, her big brown eyes filled with worry. "Uncle Peter said if I told, Santa wouldn't come."

Tears finally spilled over my eyelashes, burning my cheeks.

"No, baby," I sobbed, kissing her forehead over and over again. "You did the bravest thing in the world. You saved us."

David walked over, kneeling down next to us. "Clara, troopers are on their way to the venue. But you need to check your house. If Evan and Peter had access to your safe key today, they might have cleared out your personal documents at home."

My stomach lurked. The safe in the bridal suite had only contained copies. The original deeds to Mark’s house, his military service medals, and Sophie’s original birth certificate were locked in the wall safe behind the painting in my home office.

"I need to go home," I said, wiping my tears.

"I'm driving you," David said, pulling his car keys from his pocket. "And we're taking my truck."
