Chapter 15 - The Threat Realized

I stared at the glowing phone screen, the cold text message burning into my retinas.
I didn't panic. I didn't cry. The weakness that had kept me silent during my years of grief was completely gone.
I saved a screenshot of the message, forwarded it directly to Trooper Miller and Uncle David, and immediately blocked the number.
Ten minutes later, David’s truck pulled into my driveway. He didn't come alone. He brought two of Mark’s former military buddies—men who owned private security firms and had known my husband since high school.
"He's trying to scare you into dropping the charges, Clara," David said, walking into my kitchen while his friends began inspecting the perimeter of the house. "That's standard mob intimidation. But we aren't taking any chances."
By noon, my home was transformed into a fortress. High-definition security cameras were installed at every corner of the property, the locks were upgraded to commercial-grade deadbolts, and Mark’s friends set up a twenty-four-hour neighborhood watch rotation.
I called Sophie’s daycare, pulled her out of classes indefinitely, and arranged for a private tutor to come to the house.
That afternoon, my mother showed up at the front door, looking pale and hollow.
She stood on the porch, holding a Tupperware container of soup, her eyes red from crying. "Clara... please let me in. I need to see you and Sophie."
I stood behind the screen door, looking at the woman who raised me.
"Did you know Peter was using Mark's money, Mom?" I asked, my voice calm and devoid of emotion.
"I didn't know it was illegal!" she sobbed. "Peter said Mark would have wanted to help the family! He said we were all going to be rich!"
"Mark didn't work his whole life to make Peter rich, Mom," I said through the mesh screen. "He worked to keep his daughter safe. And you let a predator walk right through our front door."
May you like
"Clara, please..."
"Go home, Mom," I said quietly, locking the deadbolt. "Don't come back here."
