Chapter 11 - The Cornered Rat

Trooper Miller rounded the alley corner, his firearm pointed straight at Evan’s chest.
"Hands in the air! Drop the envelope now!" the trooper commanded over the sound of the falling rain.
Evan backed up against the brick wall of the alley, panting heavily. "Stay back! I bought those bonds! I have a legal right to this estate!"
"Evan, stop!" I yelled, pushing my door open despite David trying to hold me back. I stood in the heavy rain, my ruined wedding dress soaking up mud around my heels. "It's over! Look at yourself!"
Evan looked at me, his eyes full of pure venom. "You stupid, arrogant bitch! You could have had everything! We could have been a power couple! But you couldn't just keep your mouth shut and let me manage the money!"
"It was never your money!" I screamed back. "It was Mark's! It was Sophie's! You are nothing but a thief!"
Evan suddenly reached into his coat pocket.
"Gun!" Trooper Miller shouted.

Evan didn't pull a gun. He pulled a heavy silver metal lighter and flicked the flame to life. He held the flame directly under the corner of the paper envelope containing Mark’s original bearer bonds.
"Back off!" Evan screamed, his face lit up by the yellow flame. "Back off or I burn every single page right now! Nobody gets a dime!"
