Chapter 19 - The New Horizon

|

That evening, Uncle David and his wife joined us for a backyard barbecue to celebrate the launch of my foundation's new office building.

The scent of grilled burgers and sweet summer corn filled the warm night air. David was standing by the grill, flipping steaks, while his wife helped Sophie set the plastic outdoor table.

I sat on the wooden deck stairs, holding a glass of iced tea, looking out at the yard.

For two years, I had lived in a constant state of hyper-vigilance, looking over my shoulder, waiting for the next lie to drop, waiting for the mob or the court or the ghost of Evan to come crashing through my peace.

But sitting there, watching Sophie laugh as she chased fireflies across the lawn, I realized the fear had finally left my body.

I pulled out my wallet, opening the small clear sleeve on the left side.

Inside was a faded photograph of Mark, taken at a summer picnic five years ago. He was laughing into the camera, holding a tiny baby Sophie on his shoulders.

"We did it, Mark," I whispered softly to the photo, touching his face with my thumb. "She's safe. Her future is secure. And nobody is ever going to take your place."

I closed my wallet, slid it into my pocket, and stood up to join my family at the dinner table.

The white wedding dress was gone, burned in the city dump months ago. The fake prince was in a steel cell. And the life I had built with my own two hands was finally, truly ours.
