Chapter 17 - The Verdict

|
"Will the defendant please stand?" Judge Harrison ordered.
Evan stood up slowly, his ankle chains clinking loudly against the hardwood floor of the courtroom.
"On Count 1, Grand Larceny in the First Degree, how do you find?"
"Guilty," the jury foreman announced firmly.
"On Count 2, Forgery in the Second Degree..."
"Guilty."
"On Count 3, Felony Witness Intimidation..."
"Guilty."
The verdict echoed through the silent courtroom like a series of heavy hammers.
Judge Harrison adjusted his glasses, looking down at Evan with cold disdain. "Mr. Vance-Miller, you preyed upon a grieving widow and a fatherless child. You utilized deceit, manipulation, and physical intimidation to enrich yourself. This court shows zero leniency for human parasites."
The judge slammed his gavel down. "I sentence you to eighteen years in the state penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for the first twelve years."
Evan didn't scream. He didn't fight. He simply closed his eyes as the bailiffs grabbed his arms and led him through the side door toward the holding cells.
Peter was sentenced to three years of probation, five hundred hours of community service, and full financial restitution for the damage caused to my home safe.
As I walked out of the courthouse steps into the bright winter sunshine, reporters swarmed around me, thrusting microphones into my face.
"Mrs. Miller! How do you feel about the sentence?"
"Are you going to keep your husband's trust?"
"What do you have to say to other women in your position?"

I stopped at the top of the stone steps, looking into the news cameras.
"I have only one thing to say," I stated clearly. "Listen to your children. They see the truth long before we do."
