The heavy double doors of the grand ballroom swung open, and the suffocating tension of the vestibule was instantly replaced by the warm, golden glow of a thousand crystal chandeliers. Hundreds of eyes turned toward us, followed immediately by a thunderous wave of applause.
I had made my choice. Instead of retreating to put on the wig hidden in that mahogany box, I walked into my wedding reception with my natural hair—sparse, uneven, and undeniably short. It was no longer a symbol of my illness or a badge of shame. Tonight, it was my crown of survival.
