Chapter 13 - The Unwelcome Call

On the final day of our honeymoon, my phone vibrated on the bedside table. The caller ID flashed with my mother’s name. I should have ignored it, but a morbid curiosity made me press accept.
Her voice was instantly hysterical, a chaotic mess of panic and begging. She pleaded with me to talk to Liam, to save the family business that was now teetering on the edge of total bankruptcy as other investors fled like rats from a sinking ship.
"Valeria, you have to help us! Chloe is crying her eyes out; she's been completely blacklisted from every socialite circle!"
She sobbed dramatically, expecting me to fold as I always had.
I took a slow, deep breath. When I spoke, my voice was eerily calm, void of any anger or sorrow.

"Mother, I told you already. I refuse to let anyone pity me ever again. And I certainly have no pity left for the people who spent my entire life trying to drown me."
I hung up. I blocked her number, and then I blocked my father and Chloe. This time, it was forever.
