Chapter 9 - The Audio Trap

|

Eleanor turned around instantly. In less than half a second, her face performed a miraculous transformation. The cruel, cold sneer vanished entirely, replaced by a soft, maternal mask of deep concern and exhaustion.

"Oh! Julian, darling!" Eleanor gasped sweetly, placing a hand over her heart as if startled. "Thank goodness you’re home early! It’s been an absolute nightmare here!"

I stood in the doorway, my arms hanging loosely at my sides, watching her performance with detached, clinical fascination.

"Is that so?" I asked smoothly.

"Yes, sweetheart!" Eleanor sighed dramatically, shaking her head. "Poor Clara had a terrible dizzy spell and clumsily knocked her pain medicine right off the dresser! Glass went everywhere! I begged her to rest on the couch, but she’s being so hysterical, dragging herself around on the floor, and poor little Leo is completely terrified by her outbursts—"

"Quiet," I said.

The word wasn't shouted. It was delivered in a flat, quiet baritone that seemed to cut the air in the room in half.

Eleanor blinked, her fake smile faltering for a fraction of a second. "Excuse me?"

I ignored her completely. I stepped over the pile of shattered glass, knelt beside my weeping wife, and gently slipped my arms under her knees and back.

"Julian..." Clara sobbed into my neck, her entire body trembling against mine. "The glass... the baby... she won't give him to me..."

"Shh," I whispered, kissing her hot, tear-streaked temple. "I'm here, baby. You're safe now. I've got you."

I lifted Clara carefully in my arms, avoiding the sharp glass on the floor, and carried her out of the nursery to the large leather armchair in the master bedroom across the hall. I set her down gently, wrapped a warm blanket around her shoulders, and met her terrified eyes.

"Stay right here," I said softly.

I walked back into the nursery. Eleanor was standing by the crib, clutching Leo tightly against her chest, her eyes flashing with defensive anger.

"Julian, really, you are being utterly dramatic!" Eleanor scoffed, tightening her grip on the infant. "I am his grandmother! Clara is clearly in no psychological state to care for a newborn right now. She needs an immediate psychiatric evaluation! I am simply keeping your son safe—"

I reached into my suit jacket pocket, pulled out my smartphone, and tapped the screen once.
