Chapter 18 - Twilight in Phoenix

|

On Leo’s first birthday, we hosted a small, beautiful gathering in our backyard.

The yard was decorated with golden balloons, soft outdoor lanterns, and tables laden with homemade food. Audrey was there with her husband and daughter. A few of our closest, genuine friends filled the space with warm chatter, music, and laughter.

Clara stood near the birthday cake, holding Leo on her hip. He wore a little party hat, clapping his tiny hands excitedly as everyone sang "Happy Birthday."

Standing by the outdoor grill, I looked around at the small circle of people gathered in our yard. There were no fake smiles here. No curated social media performances. No subtle insults wrapped in velvet tones. There was only real, quiet, authentic love.

When the guests departed and the sun began to set over the Phoenix horizon, painting the desert sky in breathtaking shades of purple, orange, and deep red, Clara and I sat on the patio wooden bench.

Leo was sound asleep in my arms, his small head resting heavily against my chest, his warm breath rising and falling in a peaceful rhythm.

Clara leaned her head against my shoulder, lacing her fingers through mine.

"Look at him, Julian," she murmured softly, watching our son’s peaceful face. "He’s growing up surrounded by safety. He will never know what it feels like to be made to feel small."

"He will never know," I agreed, kissing her forehead. "That was the bargain I made the day I parked three blocks away."

"Real family isn't about blood, is it?" she asked quietly.

"No," I replied, looking out at the fading desert twilight. "Family is the fortress you build to protect the people who matter. And the courage to slam the gates shut on anyone who tries to destroy it."
