Chapter 2 - The Perfect Matriarch

|

To the outside world, Eleanor Vance was a saint. She was a woman who maintained flawless silver hair, wore tailored linen suits, and spent her weekends organizing charity luncheons for local orphanages. Her Facebook page was a curated museum of domestic perfection, filled with polished family portraits, quotes about generational love, and glowing posts about her growing family.

"Family is the only anchor in a storm, Julian," she used to tell me whenever I visited her estate.

When she arrived at our house carrying two oversized designer suitcases and radiating the overpowering scent of expensive jasmine perfume, she looked like an angel of mercy. But the moment the front door closed behind her, the temperature in the house dropped ten degrees.

Her initial attacks on Clara were so subtle that I almost missed them entirely.

"Oh, sweetheart," Eleanor murmured on her first morning, casually adjusting a vase of flowers on the dining table while looking Clara up and down. "You still look so dreadfully pale. I know the delivery was difficult, but letting yourself go entirely isn't going to help little Leo, is it?"

Clara looked down at her oversized sweatpants, her lower lip trembling. "I'm just... so tired, Eleanor. Sitting up still hurts."

"Well, my generation simply got on with it," Eleanor replied, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "We didn't lie in bed all day feeling sorry for ourselves."

Over the next week, the micro-aggressions escalated into covert warfare. Eleanor cooked meals filled with ingredients Clara was allergic to, claiming she "forgot." She altered the nursery temperature setting, blaming the old thermostat. And then, the nursery camera—a standard Wi-Fi baby monitor—began disconnecting every single time I left the house for an executive meeting.

Eleanor always had a ready excuse. "Oh, the internet in this house is just so unreliable, Julian!"
