Chapter 11 - Red Lights in the Driveway

Eleanor realized in that moment that her power over me was entirely dead. The illusion had been shattered, and no amount of emotional manipulation or motherly guilt could mend it.
She didn't shed a single tear of regret. Instead, she flew into a hysterical, narcissistic rage. She stomped down the hallway toward the guest suite, screaming at the top of her lungs that I was an ungrateful, heartless monster, that Clara had brainwashed me, and that she was going to destroy my reputation throughout the entire city.
While she shoved her clothes into her designer suitcases, I acted with clinical efficiency.
I carried Leo back to Clara, placing the crying infant gently into his mother’s waiting arms. The moment Clara felt her son against her skin, her sobbing quieted, and Leo’s frantic screams softened into quiet, sniffling coos.
I picked up the house phone and dialed a specialized medical bio-recovery service. "I need an emergency home crew at my residence to clean up shattered glass and prescription chemical residue in a nursery. Thirty minutes."
Then, I dialed a private nursing agency. "Send a high-priority home health nurse to monitor a postpartum hemorrhage recovery patient. Immediately."
By the time Eleanor dragged her two heavy suitcases into the front foyer, red and blue emergency lights were already flashing through the front windows.
Two Phoenix police cruisers had pulled up into my driveway. Audrey had forwarded the raw video evidence directly to the precinct commander—a close colleague of our family attorney.
Eleanor stepped onto the front porch, pulling her coat around her shoulders, only to freeze as two uniformed officers stepped up the walkway.
"Eleanor Vance?" the lead officer asked sternly.

"Officers! Thank goodness!" Eleanor immediately gasped, raising her hands to her face in a desperate attempt to summon tears. "My son has lost his mind! He’s being abusive, he forced me out of the house—"
"Ma'am, we have viewed the security footage from inside the residence," the officer interrupted coldly, pulling a official document from his clipboard. "You are being formally served with an emergency order of protection and an immediate criminal trespass warning. If you set foot on this property again, you will be arrested instantly."
