Chapter 9 - Rachel's Confession

|

Before Daniel could deal with the syndicate, he needed to address the traitor in his own life. He loaded the Glock 19 from his desk drawer, chambered a round, and tucked it into the waistband of his jeans. He pulled his heavy winter coat tightly around himself to conceal the weapon and left the office.

The sun was just beginning to rise, painting the snowy streets in pale shades of pink and orange. It was Christmas morning. Families were waking up, children were running to living rooms to tear open presents, and Daniel was driving toward his ex-girlfriend’s house with a loaded gun.

He parked a block away from Rachel’s upscale townhome and walked the rest of the distance. He didn't bother knocking. He used a heavy decorative rock from the porch to smash the glass pane on the back door, reached in, and unlocked it.

Rachel was standing in the kitchen, pouring a cup of coffee. She screamed and dropped the mug, the hot liquid splashing across the pristine hardwood floor as Daniel stormed in, his eyes blazing with a dangerous fury.

“Daniel! What are you doing? Are you insane?” she shrieked, backing against the refrigerator.

“Where is she, Rachel?” Daniel demanded, pulling the gun from his waistband and resting it casually on the kitchen island.

Rachel’s eyes locked onto the weapon, all the color draining from her face. “I don't know what you're talking about! Put that away!”

“You planted the tracker. You stole the Vanguard files. You called me last night to keep me away from the house so they could grab her,” Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “Did they promise you a cut of the three million? Or did they just threaten to kill you if you didn't help them?”

Rachel began to sob, sinking down to the floor. “I had no choice, Daniel! My husband… he didn't die of a heart attack. He owed them money. When he died, the debt passed to me. They told me if I got them access to your firm’s offshore accounts, they would wipe my slate clean. I didn't know they were going to take Emma! They promised they just wanted to scare you!”

“They know she has severe preeclampsia. If she doesn't get to a hospital, she will die, and my baby will die,” Daniel said, leaning over the counter. “Give me a name, Rachel. Or I swear to God, I will leave you to them.”
