Chapter 11 - The Brothers-in-Law

|

Elias stared at the Glock, then up at Daniel’s determined, exhausted face. Slowly, the ex-Marine lowered the shotgun. He coughed, a wet, rattling sound, and leaned against the cold metal of the tow truck.

“You actually brought a gun to a cartel fight. You're either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid,” Elias muttered, wincing as he shifted his weight.

“Probably both,” Daniel replied, lowering the pistol. “Emma didn't tell me about you. She didn't tell me about any of this. I thought she was leaving me.”

Elias let out a harsh laugh. “Leave you? She loves you, man. Too much. She knew those loan sharks were circling your firm. She found the GPS tracker on your car two days ago. She didn't want to tell you because she knew you'd try to fight them legally, and these guys don't use lawyers. They use body bags.”

“We don't have time for this,” Daniel said, checking his watch. It was past 9:00 AM. Emma had been in their custody for over five hours. With her blood pressure spiking, every minute was a death sentence. “Can you fight?”

Elias reached into his jacket and pulled out a heavy tactical vest and a few spare magazines. “I can shoot. That’s enough. But we need a plan. Silas has at least six armed guards at that warehouse. We can't just knock on the front door.”

“I have the burner phone they gave me,” Daniel said, holding up the cheap plastic device. “They want three million dollars from a Vanguard account. I'm going to tell them I have the transfer codes, and I want to make the exchange in person. When they open the doors for me, you take out the guards from the perimeter.”

Elias shook his head. “It’s a suicide mission. They’ll kill you as soon as they have the codes.”

“They don't know the codes are fake,” Daniel said coldly. “And they don't know I have a pissed-off Marine in the shadows.”

Elias managed a grim smile. “Alright, suit. Let's go save my sister.”

They piled into Daniel’s SUV, leaving the blood-stained auto shop behind. As they sped toward the industrial district, the snow began to fall heavier, a blinding whiteout that matched the absolute chaos raging in Daniel’s mind. He was going to bring his family home, or he was going to die trying.
