Chapter 3 - The GPS Tracker

|

The drive back to his house felt like a nightmare simulation. Dr. Aris’s words echoed relentlessly in Daniel’s mind. Terrified of whoever has been following her. Emma hadn't been paranoid because of the pregnancy; she had been trying to survive. And Daniel, completely absorbed in his failing business deals and Rachel’s emotional demands, had missed every single red flag.

He pulled into his garage and sat in the driver’s seat for a long moment, staring blankly at the wall. If someone was following Emma, how did they know where she went? She rarely drove her own car lately; she always took his SUV because the heater worked better.

A sudden, chilling thought struck him. Daniel opened the car door, dropped to his knees on the cold concrete, and pulled out his phone, turning on the flashlight. He crawled under the rear bumper of the SUV, sweeping the bright beam of light across the muddy undercarriage.

There it was.

Tucked neatly behind the exhaust pipe, held in place by a heavy-duty magnet, was a small, black rectangular box. A blinking red LED light pulsed softly in the darkness. It was a military-grade GPS tracker.

Daniel ripped it off the metal frame, his hands shaking with a violent mixture of rage and terror. Someone had been tracking his movements. Someone knew exactly when he was home, when he left for work, and when he was driving over to Rachel’s house to offer comfort.

He stormed into the kitchen and threw the tracker onto the granite countertop. He needed to find out who was monitoring them. He opened his laptop, desperately trying to log into their joint bank accounts. If Emma had run away to protect herself and the baby, she would need money. She had left her purse behind, but she knew the passwords to their emergency funds.

The screen loaded, and Daniel scrolled through the recent transactions. His eyes locked onto a pending charge from 3:15 AM. It was for fifty dollars at the Starlight Motel, a rundown establishment located two towns over, right on the edge of the state line.

She had used the emergency debit card. She wanted him to find her, or she had no other choice. Daniel grabbed his coat and a heavy metal flashlight from the utility drawer. He was going to the Starlight Motel, and he was ready to kill whoever was hunting his wife.
