Chapter 10 - The Ambush

“His name is Silas,” Rachel choked out, mascara running down her cheeks in thick black lines. “He runs the syndicate out of the old shipping yards near the docks. He has a private warehouse there. That’s where they take people who owe them.”
“If you call him and warn him I'm coming, I will come back for you,” Daniel promised, grabbing his gun and turning his back on her.
He walked out the front door, the freezing wind whipping at his coat. He had a location. He had the burner phone. Now he just needed backup. He pulled up Elias Thorne’s military file on his phone again and found a registered address for a small auto repair shop on the south side of town. If Elias had survived the gunshot wound at the motel, he would be there.
Daniel drove recklessly, running red lights on the empty holiday streets. He pulled up to the rusted, corrugated metal doors of Thorne Auto. The shop looked abandoned, but Daniel noticed fresh tire tracks in the snow leading up to the side entrance.
He stepped out of his SUV, his hand resting on the grip of his pistol. As he walked toward the door, a sudden noise made him freeze.
Click.
It was the unmistakable sound of a shotgun being cocked.
“Take one more step, and I'll blow you in half, rich boy,” a gruff, pained voice echoed from the shadows of an old tow truck.
Daniel slowly raised his hands, turning his head. A man stepped out of the shadows. His face was pale, sweating profusely despite the cold, and his left shoulder was heavily bandaged, fresh blood seeping through the white gauze. He was holding a twelve-gauge shotgun with his good arm.
“Elias,” Daniel said steadily.
“You're a real piece of work, Carter,” Elias spat, keeping the gun trained on Daniel’s chest. “Emma tried to protect you. She told me you were innocent, just a stupid suit who got played by your crazy ex. I tried to get her out of town, but those animals found us.”
“I know,” Daniel said. “And I know where they took her. The docks. A guy named Silas.”

Elias paused, his eyes narrowing in suspicion. “You're a hedge fund manager. What are you gonna do? Threaten to audit them?”
Daniel slowly pulled the Glock from his coat and held it by the barrel, offering it up. “I'm going to get my wife back. Are you coming or not?”
