Chapter 20 - The Second Envelope

|

Another month went by. Spring began to thaw the frozen ground outside the hospital window.

Daniel sat in his usual chair beside Emma’s bed, his laptop open on his knees. He had resigned from his firm, choosing to live off his savings so he could dedicate every waking moment to Lily and Emma.

“Lily smiled today,” Daniel said softly, not looking up from his screen. “I know they say it’s just gas at this age, but I swear she smiled at me. She has your eyes, Emma. I wish you could see them.”

He paused, waiting for a miracle. Waiting for her fingers to twitch, or her eyelids to flutter. But the room remained perfectly still.

Daniel sighed, closing his laptop. He kissed her forehead, promising to be back the next morning, and walked out into the hospital parking lot.

The evening air was crisp. He walked toward his SUV, fishing his keys out of his pocket. As he approached the driver’s side door, he stopped dead in his tracks.

Tucked neatly under the windshield wiper was a small, white envelope.

Daniel’s blood ran cold. It looked exactly like the envelope Emma had left on the kitchen table on Christmas Eve.

He looked around the dimly lit parking lot. It was empty. The hair on the back of his neck stood up as he slowly reached out and pulled the envelope from the glass.

His name was written across the front. But it wasn't Emma’s delicate handwriting. The letters were sharp, blocky, and aggressively penned in thick black marker.

Daniel tore the envelope open with shaking hands. Inside was a single, typed sentence on a pristine white card.

“Silas was just a middleman. The real debt hasn't been paid, and we know the baby is home.”

Daniel dropped the card. He looked frantically at the shadows between the parked cars, reaching instinctively for a gun he no longer carried. His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out.

It was the home security system. Motion detected in the nursery.

Daniel screamed, dropping the phone on the pavement, and sprinted toward his car, the nightmare beginning all over again.
