Chapter 9

The line between consent and control turned out to be a password change.

Nine months earlier, Isabella still controlled her own professional cloud account.

Then one morning she could not sign in.

Grant told her the system had been compromised.

Vanessa helped “fix” everything.

New password.

New recovery email.

New two-factor authentication.

Isabella approved it.

What she did not know was that Vanessa’s phone became the recovery device.

From that point forward, Vanessa could reset access without Isabella.

Two months later, files began moving to external folders.

Grant claimed Isabella had authorized a backup arrangement.

She had not.

The digital audit found the transfer history.

Then it found something worse.

Several approvals carrying Isabella’s name originated from Grant’s home office computer at times Isabella was verifiably elsewhere.

Some might have been legitimate if she gave him access.

Others involved documents she said she never saw.

The financial betrayal was becoming provable.

The physical abuse was harder.

Grant denied ever hurting her intentionally.

He claimed Isabella bruised easily.

He described one argument where he “restrained” her because she was throwing jewelry.

Vanessa supported him.

Then Isabella remembered the bracelet.

The distinctive jeweled bracelet Serena—no, Vanessa wore at the preview was not random jewelry.

It had originally belonged to Isabella’s mother.

Massimo stared at her.

“Vanessa was wearing Teresa’s bracelet?”

Isabella nodded.

“I thought Grant gave it to her.”

“Why would he have it?”

“He took the jewelry box months ago.”

That transformed the missing box.

Grant had not simply removed sentimental property.

He had redistributed it.

Vanessa wore Teresa’s bracelet openly in front of Isabella.

Massimo understood the psychological cruelty immediately.

But Isabella said something more important.

“The clasp scratches.”

“What?”

“Mom hated it because the inside edge scratched skin.”

Isabella touched her wrist.

“One of the marks Noah saw came from Vanessa forcing it onto me before a dinner.”

Massimo stared at her.

“Why?”

“Grant wanted photographs showing I still had Mom’s bracelet.”

The next morning Vanessa wore it herself.

That meant Vanessa had participated directly in creating false appearances around Isabella’s injuries and possessions.

The siblings were not simply protecting each other.

They were managing the same story.
