Chapter 10

The major break came from a folder Isabella had forgotten existed.
Not hidden.
Not stolen.
Stored with an old therapist.
Three years earlier, shortly after Noah’s first birthday, Isabella had attended six private counseling sessions.
Grant went to the first two.
Then stopped.
The therapist still had contemporaneous notes.
With Isabella’s permission, they were released.
Massimo expected evidence that Grant had always been abusive.
He found the opposite.
At the beginning, Grant genuinely helped Isabella distance herself from the Lombardi world.
He encouraged therapy.
Supported fewer family events.
Agreed that Noah should have a quieter childhood.
He even told Isabella:
“You don’t owe your father access to every part of your life.”
Massimo read the sentence twice.
Grant had once been exactly the person Isabella needed.
That was the twist.
The isolation did not begin as a trap.
It began as protection.
Then the notes changed.
After Grant joined several Lombardi business ventures, he became financially dependent on the same family influence he once criticized.
He wanted access to Massimo’s network without Massimo inside his marriage.
He wanted Isabella’s design credibility without her controlling the business relationship.
He wanted Noah distanced from the Lombardi name publicly, but still valuable privately as a connection to Massimo.
The contradiction poisoned everything.
Grant started turning Isabella’s boundaries into walls.
When she wanted contact with Massimo, he called it regression.
When she questioned Vanessa, he called it family paranoia.
When she asked for professional control back, he reminded her she had asked him to take over.
The therapist documented one sentence from Isabella:
I wanted space from my father. Grant keeps acting like that means I gave him ownership of the space.
Massimo sat alone after reading it.
For nine parts, he had seen Grant as the man who stole his daughter away.
The truth was harder.
Isabella had walked away willingly.
Because part of Massimo’s world frightened her.
Grant did not create that fracture.
He entered through it.
Then, slowly, he made himself the only person standing between Isabella and everyone else.
Massimo looked at his daughter.
“If I had listened before…”
Isabella shook her head.
“Don't make this about whether you could've saved me.”
He stopped.
That was exactly what he was doing.
She continued.
“I chose Grant.”
“Yes.”
“I also tried to leave the family.”
“Yes.”
“And he still had no right to hurt me.”
Massimo nodded.

Three truths.
None canceled the others.
