Grant’s first unsupervised afternoon with Noah happened when Noah was twelve.
Not because Grant demanded it.
That mattered.
Seven years had passed since the showroom.
Grant had completed every required program.
Therapy continued voluntarily.
No new violent incidents.
No attempts to interfere with Isabella’s studio.
No use of Noah to communicate with her.
His financial relationship with Lombardi businesses was gone.
Entirely.
Massimo preferred it that way.
Independent professionals recommended a trial.
Four hours.
Daytime.
Public places.
No overnight.
Isabella read the report twice.
Then asked Noah.
“Do you want to?”
He shrugged.
“Can leave if weird?”
“Yes.”
“Then okay.”
Grant chose a science museum.
Noah chose lunch.
That was already progress.
The first three hours were ordinary.
Then Grant made a mistake.

At the museum gift shop Noah wanted a jacket with the museum logo.
Grant said:
“You don't need that. Grandpa probably buys you better things.”
Noah stopped.
Grant heard the sentence.

Noah put the jacket back.
“I wanted this one.”
Grant looked at him.
“Then get it.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“You said Grandpa better.”
Grant closed his eyes.
“I shouldn't have.”
“True?”
“No.”
Noah frowned.
Grant corrected.
“I mean, Grandpa can buy expensive things.”
Another pause.
“That doesn't make the thing you chose worse.”
Better.
Noah still left without the jacket.
At home Isabella asked how the visit went.
“Fine.”
Then:
“Dad did thing.”
“What thing?”
Noah told her.
Isabella felt anger.
Then stopped.
Not abuse.
Not control.
A sentence.
Bad one.
Grant had corrected it.
She did not turn it into evidence the afternoon had failed.
The parenting professional reviewed the incident.
No concern requiring rollback.
Grant addressed it in therapy.
Next visit, Noah returned to the museum.
The jacket was gone.
He became angry.
Grant did not buy a different one.
Did not call stores.
Did not produce a more expensive replacement.
He said:
“That sucks.”
Noah looked surprised.
“Yes.”
Then they left.
A week later Noah found another jacket online.
Cheaper.
Different color.
He bought it using allowance and money Grant gave him for his birthday months earlier.
Grant did not call it a gift from him.
Good.
At dinner Massimo saw the jacket.
“Ugly.”
Noah stared.
Isabella kicked her father under the table.
“What?”
Noah looked down at the logo.
Then laughed.
“I like.”
Massimo shrugged.
“Then wear it.”
