Chapter 14

The final family confrontation did not happen in a showroom.

It happened in a conference room.

No jewelry.

No guests.

No broken displays.

Grant attended with counsel.

Vanessa attended separately.

Isabella sat beside her own attorney.

Massimo sat across the table.

The independent business review summarized the findings.

Unauthorized design access.

Improper account control.

Misrepresented approvals.

Misuse of Isabella’s personal property.

Vanessa’s financial links to an outside boutique.

Separate evidence concerning Grant’s physical treatment of Isabella remained part of another process.

Then Grant spoke.

He looked directly at Massimo.

“You ruined her life before I met her.”

Isabella turned toward him.

Massimo remained silent.

Grant continued.

“She was terrified of becoming you.”

Massimo finally answered.

“I know.”

That stopped Grant.

Massimo did not defend himself.

“I made parts of her childhood harder than they needed to be.”

Grant stared at him.

Massimo continued.

“That is not permission for what you did afterward.”

No one spoke.

Then Isabella addressed Vanessa.

“You watched him hurt me.”

Vanessa looked down.

“I thought you were both toxic.”

“You helped hide it.”

“I was protecting my brother.”

“You were protecting his marriage to me.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

Because that was closer.

Grant’s access to Lombardi influence had benefited everyone around him.

Vanessa included.

If Isabella left, Vanessa lost money, status, clients and access.

The excuses had always sounded emotional.

Underneath them were practical rewards.

Isabella stood.

“I’m done explaining myself to people who only listened when I was useful.”

She removed her wedding ring.

She did not throw it.

She placed it on the table in front of Grant.

Then she walked out.

Massimo wanted to follow.

He did not.

That moment belonged to her.

Grant looked at the ring for a long time.

Then he looked toward Massimo.

“What happens now?”

May you like

Massimo’s answer was quiet.

“Now you deal with people I don't control.”
