Chapter 14 - The Waitress Bites Back

"Liya, what are you doing?!" Eleanor screamed as her daughter racked the slide of the pistol, just like she had seen in movies.
"I am saving my fiancé," Liya stated, her voice devoid of fear.
"You can't go out there!" Marcus protested, trying to block the panic room door. "My orders are to keep you safe!"
"If he dies, we all die," Liya fired back, pointing the gun at the security chief. "Open the door, Marcus. Now."
Marcus stared at her, seeing the absolute, terrifying resolve in her eyes. He nodded, typing the override code into the keypad. The heavy steel door hissed open.
Liya slipped out into the chaotic hallway. The penthouse was filled with smoke and the smell of gunpowder. She moved silently, barefoot on the marble floors, making her way to the private stairwell that led to the roof.
She pushed the heavy roof access door open just a crack.
The rain whipped across her face. Adrian was on his knees, clutching his bleeding thigh. Elena Romanov was standing over him, pointing a silver revolver directly at his head.
"Any last words, Moretti?" Elena taunted.
"Yeah," Adrian coughed, blood on his lips. "Look behind you."
Elena laughed. "I don't fall for parlor tricks."
Liya stepped out of the stairwell, raising the heavy Glock with both trembling hands.
"It's not a trick, you bitch," Liya yelled over the sound of the rain.
Elena spun around in shock. Before the Russian heiress could raise her weapon, Liya squeezed the trigger.
The recoil sent a shockwave up her arms, knocking her backward. The gunshot echoed across the Manhattan skyline.

Elena Romanov dropped her silver revolver, clutching her shoulder with a shriek of agony, and collapsed onto the wet concrete.
Adrian didn't waste a second. He lunged forward, grabbing Elena's dropped weapon and executing the two remaining mercenaries before they could even turn around.
